Col. John Broam

12th CAB Commander

Col. John Broam enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1989. Following Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Lewis, Washington. Upon promotion to Sergeant in November 1992, he served as the Special Operations Team Bravo Communications Sergeant, responsible for supporting Special Forces Operational Detachment Teams during numerous deployments to Thailand and Korea.

In August 1994, Col. Broam was awarded an Army ROTC “Green to Gold” scholarship to attend Oklahoma State University. Upon graduation as a distinguished graduate, he was commissioned into the Aviation Branch in May 1997. In September 1998, following flight school and the AH-64A Aircraft Qualification Course,  Broam was assigned as a Support Platoon Leader in 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry, at Camp Eagle, Korea. He was then assigned in September 1999 to C Company, 1st Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Col. Broam served as an Attack Platoon Leader and then the Battalion Liaison Officer.

After attending the Aviation Captains Career Course, Col. Broam was assigned to the 4th Brigade, 1st Infantry Division in Katterbach, Germany in December 2001 where he served as the Brigade Assistant S3. In December 2002 he assumed command of A Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment. After a tour in Iraq, he relinquished command in May 2005 after 30 months. He was then assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 145th Aviation Regiment at Fort Rucker, Alabama as a Small Group Leader and then the Company Commander. In June 2008, Colonel Broam was selected as the Secretary of the General Staff for the Aviation Branch Commanding General.

After attending the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama, Col. Broam assumed duties in December 2010 as the Battalion Executive Officer for 3rd Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment in Illesheim, Germany. In June 2011, he became the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade Executive Officer in Katterbach, Germany. After 24 months and a deployment to Afghanistan, he assumed duties as the Deputy Brigade Commander. In August 2013, he was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division as the Chief, G3 Training. Col. Broam then assumed command of 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment in June 2014 and after 15 months reflagged the unit as 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment. In July 2016, he became the Senior Aviation Trainer at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California.

Following attendance at the Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, Col. Broam became the Senior Advisor to the Afghan Chief of General Staff (4-star) in Kabul, Afghanistan where he has served for the past twelve months.
